March Madness Workshop- Building Skills, Showing Growth

Wow! Our March Madness workshop was a lot of fun. Between Overfelt winning the recruitment award, new EPAPA middle school recruits, and a public debate by the HPE moot court teams (Fernanda, Yvonne, Liz, Destiny, Denise, and Mariam) our debaters had a great day. They were coached by former debate partners Willie Hernandez and Chris Hersey.

Special thanks to EPAPA for hosting. This workshop was the biggest of the year with 50 students in attendance. In addition to labs and competitions, Nakeena Covington Taylor and Angela Briggs Johnson led our very first legal mentor training. At the training, alumni interns Brandon Montes and Mylan Gray sat on a panel with Kierra Jackson, with all 3 youth talking about how SVUDL and mentoring have helped them.

We were happy to pair new debaters with attorney mentors. We also welcomed first time volunteers from San Jose State University, and Helena Buitrago represented the Stanford Youth Debate Initiative. Najma from Oak Grove took home the Debater of the Day honor by performing above and beyond as a rising student leader. Thanks to everyone who came out and we hope to see you for the March Madness Tournament hosted by Silver Creek this Saturday, March 19th!
