March Madness Tournament- an inspiring success!

Our March Madness Tournament this past Saturday  was phenomenal! It was our first time on the beautiful Silver Creek campus and the last time for our debaters to test their skills in tournament conditions before the SVUDL Championship. Our up and coming student leaders took a more active role than ever before, with Oak Grove Senior Destiny and Silver Creek Junior Denise working together to lead a workshop for novice debaters. Silver Creek Coach Alex Eacker also led an impact analysis with our JV students.

New students made a strong showing. Attending a debate tourney for his first time, Brandon P. won our Two Minutes of Fame contest. Ben from Silver Creek, also a first-timer,  earned the Debater of the Day award by going maverick (debating without a teammate)- something our even Program Director Shauntrice has never done!  Jason, the new novice captain from Overfelt, led his hybrid team to victory during his first ever debate tournament, and Eastside College Prep won the Spirit Award. EPAPA sophomores Nyisha, Juliet, Moises, and Santi all won team and speaker awards.

In addition, students heard inspiring talks from Johnny Khamis, San Jose City Councilmember from District 10, and Ash Kalra, San Jose City Councilmember from District 2. A special thank you to both of these Councilmembers for taking the time out of their busy schedules to encourage our rising young stars.

We're very proud of our experienced and new debaters and the heart, commitment and growth they've all shown. We're eagerly looking forward to the Santa Clara Invitational next month!
