While their peers were sleeping in, this year's SVUDL debaters were hard at work sharpening their minds and finding their voices at our Season Opening workshop this past Saturday! They took part in a full day of intensive debate training, building skills and connections that will give them an edge in debate and in life. The workshop served 80 students- more than triple the number the same workshop served in 2015!
Being in the second year of full implementation means we have a strong core of returning debaters leading their teams and mentoring newcomers. It also means our local alumni (last year's grads attending college nearby) are now working with us as interns and volunteers. They get employment experience and serve as invaluable role models for youth in our program. Most critically, though, their continued involvement means they have a vast network of supportive adults to look to and lean on as they transition to college.
The workshop was an enormous success. Oak Grove and EPAPA won Spirit Awards for displaying dedication to building a positive culture of debate, being good role models for other schools in their region and for showing the most overall sportsmanship.
The following youth won individual awards:
Debater of the Day (Peninsula): Daniela, Woodside
Debater of the Day (San Jose): Mariana, Overfelt
Get Lit Award (Peninsula): Ashli, Eastside
Get Lit Award (San Jose): Kobe, Oak Grove
Coach Award: Mr. O, Silver Creek
Congratulations to everyone on an incredible day!
