Mariana is a brand new SVUDL student who just joined our debate family this past summer. Inspired by a visit Ms. T made to Overfelt's summer school, Mariana signed up for the Summer Institute and hasn't looked back. She hasn't missed a debate practice or meeting at her school, and her dedication is already paying off - she and her partner won First Place novice team at the Season Opening Tournament! "I not only joined debate to further my skills for my dream job, but also because it's really fun!" she says.
This passionate young woman loves writing and comparing the social injustices of the past to those of the modern day. This translates into her favorite subjects being English and History. Along with debate, Mariana spends her spare time in Danza Azteca and Folklorico.
Mariana dreams of a future where she rights social and political injustices around the world by speaking or writing about them. She sees debate as a key step in her plan to fight for justice and make the world as socially and politically just as possible. "When facing these social/political issues you need to have good persuasive skills...to be able to advocate and fight for what is right." Only a freshman, Mariana already calls herself an activist. We are so honored to have this amazing young person engaging with SVUDL and debate as part of her path to changing the world!
