It's hard to believe it, but we've just finished our second full season of tournament competition with the SVUDL League Championships this past Saturday! Students, staff, and judges came together on the beautiful campus of Santa Clara University to tackle the question of increasing diplomatic and economic engagement with China one last time. The complexity and scope of arguments presented has increased enormously over the season, with our Varsity debaters delving into complex issues of space exploration and human rights in Zambia to make their case. We couldn't be prouder of the students and how much they've grown.
We're thrilled to announce this year's Champs in both Varsity and Novice Division. The Novice crown went to (drumroll please)... Caroline (Woodside) and Estefania (EPAPA)! On the Varsity side, Moot Court Debater Santi (EPAPA) and his partner Mia (Woodside) won! This marks the first time a hybrid team took top honors in Novice and Varsity in a SVUDL tournament. Students succeeding in partnerships across schools is a strong indicator of the cohesiveness of our SVUDL debate community.
Our judge pool has grown to include volunteers from SV2, San Jose State, Santa Clara Law School, other UDLs, alumni and family of our debaters. Alumni Zak and his older sister both came to judge, further expanding the tradition of debate in the Ali family. Vili and Ricanthony from Live in Peace placed in the top 5 at this, their their first official SVUDL tournament. Our 2nd place Top Novice Speaker Darius was also attending his first tournament.
