There’s no questioning the positive impact Urban Debate Leagues have on high school graduation rates. More than 95% of urban debaters graduate high school. Equipped with the skills to succeed, they are 80% more likely to graduate college than their peers. However, as the Silicon Valley Urban Debate launches into its first full year of programs in East San Jose and East Palo Alto, it wants to answer the “what’s next” steps for a debater after graduation.
To provide a solution, SVUDL has teamed up with a group of dedicated attorneys in Silicon Valley to create the Legal Career Pipeline, a program aimed to help students cross the bridge from high school to college. With debate fostering skills such as research, writing, and speech, a law career is a natural path for a speech and debate student and a field many of them express an interest in pursuing after high school. Many corporate law firms are looking to diversify their profession; a partnership with SVUDL is a win-win strategy to bring diversity to their field, as well as helping students achieve a career in a legal field.
This fall, SVUDL and Silicon Valley lawyers will begin to establish the foundation in building a long term relationship with juniors and seniors interested in a legal career. Each student will be paired up with an attorney, who will provide mentorship, professional coaching, and assistance to overcome obstacles and navigate a path to law school. It is an exciting time to be a SVUDL debater and see what opportunities open up for our hard working students as they explore their future with Silicon Valley attorneys.
