Summer's almost here, which can mean only one thing- it's time for debate camp!
Summer Debate Camps are a long tradition. Locally, multi-week camps are already scheduled at Stanford and Berkeley, bringing together the rising stars on the national debate scene for intensive skill building and competition. SVUDL supports qualified Varsity debaters in our league in attending these programs, and also hosts the SVUDL Summer Institute, bringing intellectual, behavioral, and experiential benefits to all of the youth in our program.
From July 24-29, new and returning SVUDL debaters will participate in workshops that teach them to build an argument, analyze and find weaknesses in opposing arguments, speak persuasively, and search for outside evidence, read it deeply, and use it to support their position. They will lay a foundation for high-level practice in Common Core standards for English Language Arts such as reading informational text, writing substantive, persuasive arguments, and presenting information, findings, and supporting evidence to convey a clear and distinct perspective. These skills are critical for graduation and college readiness- and for winning debate tournaments!
Workshops are led by highly qualified staff including some of the top debate minds in the country. SVUDL alumni and grads from other debate programs work with Institute students, helping them bridge the intellectual world of debate and the world they experience daily. Workshops are hands-on, high energy, and fun. We provide transportation, meals, materials, all free of charge for qualified students.
The SVUDL Summer Institute is unlike anything you've experienced. Please let us know if you'd like to visit!
