Fifteen SVUDL youth enjoyed a visit August 1, 2018, to Gap corporate headquarters in San Francisco. The field trip gave the students a unique opportunity to hear from Fortune 200 professionals who presented high-level insight into their roles and how they work individually and as a team.
The students were from SVUDL partner schools or participants of our 2018 Summer Debate Institute.
Matthew Irwin, Associate General Counsel, Global Legal Dept., Gap Inc., and member of SVUDL’s Legal Advisory Committee, led the group on a tour of the headquarters of the global fashion business with five brands — Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta and Intermix. The tour included a special visit to the Legal Department and lunch in the Gap cafeteria.
Students also participated in a roundtable discussion with six Gap team members who shared their backgrounds, how they got to Gap, the nature of their work, advice and lessons learned along the way.
Irwin advised the students to focus on the quality of the work they do in college and to "be ready to jump at opportunities when they present themselves."
Vince Adams, Chief Financial Officer, Banana Republic, encouraged students to take calculated risks in their lives and careers, and always to “assume everyone has the best intentions until they show you otherwise.”
Sheila Khan-Variba, Senior Counsel and Director, Gap Inc., advised students to trust that they bring something to the professional table. “The more you trust that you are competent in who you are, the more successful you will be.”
The group also enjoyed the opportunity to view numerous works of art from the collection of Gap founders Doris and Don Fisher displayed in gallery and office spaces throughout the headquarters. (The rest of the collection is housed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.)
